According to the words of the commander of the rocket battery “Buk M1”, there have been other cases in the past when the result greatly exceeded expectations. But ‘shooting down’ a military aircraft without a single rocket is not an everyday feat.
This time the scenario was quite extraordinary. The Ukrainian military destroyed the Russian plane with the help of the “Buk M1” anti-aircraft missile complex, and they did this without firing a single missile.
The commander who was previously awarded with the title of Hero of Ukraine, Yaroslav Melnik, told about this in an interview with the web portal ArmiyaInform.
“We shot down the plane without firing a single missile. We detected the target. We turned on the radar lights. At this time, sound messages about radar exposure sounded in the cockpit. He [the pilot] realized that he had turned from a hunter into a target. Probably, this stunned the pilot so much that he left the plane and it crashed,” said Melnik.
The defensive battery under the leadership of Melnik resisted the Russian pilots in Kharkiv region for more than half a year. They have already eliminated 28 enemy targets: 11 combat aircraft of different types, two helicopters, two cruise missiles and 13 drones.
“Our battery stood against them alone. This means that as soon as we turn our equipment on for detecting and locking onto the target, we would immediately become a convenient and well-visible target for tens of Russian pilots. As soon as they detect us, they would without hesitation cancel their primary flight tasks, such as bombardment of troops or objects, and instead would instantly focus on the destruction of our anti-aircraft missile system,” Melnik commented further.
According to him, the complex can deal with only one enemy target at a time and they cannot observe if there are any other enemy aircraft flying in the same formation. So the crew had very little time allocated for the elimination of this target.
The officer says that there were only seconds in their reserve. And it is always a thrill knowing the fact that as soon as they activate their equipment, the entire procedure becomes a game of who does their work better. Also because of the same reason, as soon as the rocket launch is completed, the team changes its position to avoid any potential hits with anti-radar missiles.
